In this workshop you will be introduced to the fun and easy way of making plates using solar exsposure. This process does not require the use of acids, solvents and grounds making it safe for home, the studio or even the classroom. This workshop will be led by Brad Cushman, studio artist, curator and educator living in Little Rock, Arkansas. Brad recivied a BA in Studio Art from Illinois College, and an MFA in Painting from Canbrook Academy of Art.

Black Box Press Presents...Collagraph Workshop!

From February 17 - 19 Black Box Press hosted a Collagraph workshop.

In this workshop participants used a variety of textured materials glued to a cardboard surface to create some wonderfully textured and sophisticated images. This workshop provided a very accessible way of making prints using everyday materials such as leaves, card, wallpaper, and string. Participants used this collage printmaking technique to print using both etching and relief techniques.

We had some great participants that created some wonderful work!

On July 11, 2009 Black Box Press will sponsor a free printmaking demonstration with mixed media artist and printmaker Alexa Unser. From 1:00pm -4:00pm Unser will demonstrate several mono-printing techniques used in her work. This demonstration is offered in conjunction with an exhibit of Unser’s work that can be seen on display at the THEA Foundation located in downtown North Little Rock. Works will on display from July 6-July 20, 2009.

Open Studio
Open Studio is available for individuals to work independently on printmaking projects. Open studio access is available by advanced reservations only. This is to insure sufficient time and space for equipment and studio use. Technical assistance is available during open studio hours; however no instruction will be available. Days/Hours:
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday: 10 AM - 4 PM (except holidays and special circumstances)
Saturday and Sunday - 10 AM - 5 PM (except holidays and special circumstances)
Rates:
$15/hour + materials fee ($10 per printing session)
You must reserve a minimum 2-hour block.
***Two hour time blocks are paid as you go****
$12/hours + materials fee ($15 ONE TIME FEE)
You must reserve a minimum 6-hour block

$10/hour + materials fee ($15 ONE TIME FEE)
You must reserve 7 hours or more
6 hours or more paid in advance. Studio hours can be used in any combination during a given month, but the artist must reserve each time block until hours have been completed.

Alexa Unser Graces Black Box Press

Alexa Unser was raised in Bozeman, Montana, received her undergraduate degree in Studio art from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, and is currently an MFA candidate at Purdue University. She Works in a variety of print media ranging from traditional lithography and intaglio to alternative monoprinting, text, and photo processes. Her work has been shown both internationally and domestically: at the Pont Aven School of Contemporary Art and University of Colorado Boulder to name a few.

In this demo participants will explore the infinite possibilities of mono-printing! This demo will demonstrate various methods and help participants use these methods to create beautiful prints. In addition to learning process and technique, participants will learn editioning practices, and discuss the mono-print in the context of the greater world of printmaking.
Both water and oil based methods will be presented. This demo will cover drawn mono-print, solvent washes, ghost printing, and viscosity printing, and many others techniques.

Gelatin Printing Demo

Experience printmaking without a press! Gelatin Printing is a simple and versatile way to make mono-prints. Gelatin plates allow for image transfers for effects similar to etching. It also uses techniques similar to those used in woodcuts, such as cutting and gouging. Materials used in this process can be found in your home or your local grocery store. Although simple and basic in nature this process can result in images that are rich and complex. Two demonstrations will be given. The first demo will begin at 1:00pm and the second will begin at 3:00pm.

Etching Workshop: The Magic of Line
Instructor – David Warren
June 1-June 5, 2009

In this workshop students will focus on the process of etching and printing copper plates using less toxic methods. Students will learn the basics of preparing plates using both hard and soft grounds. The class will use these techniques to create a small edition of prints using black/white or color inks. Instruction will be led by David Warren, local artist and printmaker. David is the Assistant Professor of Art Education and Printmaking at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. David shows his work in various venues including Gallery 26 in Little Rock, Arkansas.
